The biggest thrill for me is shooting a live performance. There is nothing as rewarding as capturing that split second of high energy - whether it's Springsteen, Jagger or a new club band.
It started in 1968 when I landed a summer job with the Chicago Tribune, shooting the Democratic Convention Chicago Riots. My first music assignments were Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Jopin and Cream. In 1970, I moved to Boston and worked with local greats like Aerosmith, J.Geils Band and Boston - relationships that have lasted more than just years. I was also fortunate to work with Elton John, Queen, The Cars, Meatloaf and Ted Nugent, photographing albums, publicity and tours. I also shot assignment work for Rolling Stone Magazine, Creem, Circus and Hit Parader, as well as CBS, Epic & WEA record labels. Those were the golden days of rock photography, when a photographer could have full access to the artists, and the music was the bottom line.
